The Real Market Size of Public Cloud Services

Gartner’s recent report estimating the size of the world cloud market was released over the weekend and has been a hot topic. Gartner estimates the worldwide market at $131 billion in 2013. That’s a big number, but it can mean a lot of things. In this Wired article, Paddy Srinivasan breaks down the meaning of the number and details some more specific likely estimations of just IaaS, SaaS and PaaS. This article is a nice breakdown of the numbers at a tactical level.

Mature IaaS cloud, lower prices grab IT shops’ attention

Bridget Botelho’s SearchCloudComputing article covers the same Gartner report, but from a different angle. Botelho keeps all the markets as one, but explores the IT shifts behind the growing adoption numbers. IaaS, in particular, she cites as growing due to the maturation of key cloud vendors and an overall drop in pricing across the board.

IT Services Spending Power Shifts Away From IT Leaders

This CIO.com article describes the power balance between business leaders and IT leaders as a pendulum that swings back and forth over time. The significance of the latest shift, the article explains, is that it hasn’t been so significant since the dawn of the PC era. IT has become conservative and the business leaders are driving the budget charge today, with a strong preference toward SaaS and away from capital expenditures and investments.
